ANGELA McCUMBER sculptor and painter Other than four years of high school art in Toronto I am a self-taught artist in the mediums that I work with today. I have been STONE CARVING since 1985 and since then I have developed a self-taught personal skill that has given me a huge amount of pleasure. The physical energy required to carve and the internal vision to create something from an inanimate object is a real challenge; consequently, each piece has it’s own difficulties. While carving I try to feel the ‘positive spirit’ of the stone and carefully create a composition that radiates feelings of joy, well-being, compassion and love. Whether I am creating a multi-faceted piece (a combination of human and/or animal figures) or a singular form (human or animal) I try to convey a thought provoking element to my work. Each piece should tell a subliminal story of it’s own. I write about each piece I carve…my inspiration, my thought processes as I carve…and I also take photographs as each carving develops. Many years ago I painted in acrylic and while it was an excellent medium, I never considered it to be ‘my’ medium…it was a means to an end. In 200 I switched to OIL PAINTING and it is a medium that I have come to love and now enjoy as much as stone carving. It has it’s own sculptural qualities! Unlike my sculpture, which is loosely representational and relatively free flowing, my paintings tend to be more realistic and detailed. I consider most of my portrait compositions to be ‘expressive portraiture’ because I try to create a story or a mood so that the painting becomes more ‘real’, more interesting and the individual in the portrait becomes more than merely a ‘face’. When I paint landscapes I like to include a human presence so that the viewer can be drawn in and become more fully involved with the atmosphere I’ve created. I HAVE BEEN A STUDENT at the Art School of Peterborough and thank Richard Hayman (Director) and Di Collins (Instructor) for giving me the courage and the confidence to paint the human factor of life! As a member of Kawartha Artist’s Gallery and Studio I attend Life Drawing and Portraiture groups on a regular basis and have gained an incredible amount of inspiration and positive reinforcement from other members there. With respect to my sculpture I have my husband, David, to thank for all the unlimited support over the years. I HAVE EXHIBITED my sculpture at the annual Juniper Island Art Festival on Stony Lake since 1992 and have shown my paintings since 2003. I have been involved in many aspects of the JIAF since it began in 1992 and was Curator for the JIAF for a number of years. My stone carvings and paintings have been included in private collections in Canada and England.
