DORIS GARDNER

As an artist, Doris Gardner is a late bloomer. When her husband died in 1990.  I took up my brush.”

Outdoor Painters group, with whom she paints landscapes, flowers and house exteriors. “I paint mainly what I see. I don’t follow the rules. I’m spontaneous   and I’ve dabbled in other mediums but I mainly work in oil. “I love oils because they’re easy to mix and I can paint over my mistakes. Even if I work in other media, I only show in oils.”

Subjects, such as landscapes, range from as far south as Point Pelee to Algonquin Park in the north, as well as the area around Peterborough.

“When I drive along any side road near here I see pictures along the way. I enjoy being outdoors in most seasons, especially in the winter and spring, but not too much in the sum mer. It’s too hot and green.” While on site, she sketches the under painting first and takes a photograph, then finishes the painting in her studio.

Gardner’s artwork is quite popular. She has repeat clientele who buy her paintings and also tell their friends and family about her. Much of her artwork is sold as gifts. As well as showing her work at KAGS, she shows with the Eastern Ontario Association of Artists.

Gardner was born in Havelock, taught school for 20 years in Norwood, and moved to Peterborough in 1993. “I started painting to fill a void, but now I get great satisfaction from painting something that someone will recognize. I’m a realistic painter.”  ” I welcome visitors to my own studio, where at any given time I have about 50 paintings on display.
