| HOME | For Your Information ... Did you get your newsletter? Prez Says...words from Debara Power from "Our Creative Side" the KAGS Newsletter... Well the summer is over, the leaves are turning, and before we know it the snow will be flying. Change is everywhere in our environment. Many of us find change stressful. I know I always find myself a little blue when the summer ends as if I somehow missed it all. It seems lately change happens so fast that it is difficult to keep up. The changes we see in technology are mind boggling. Everything has become fast paced and information travels from one person to the next at the speed of light. Recently, I have returned to college which has been a huge change for me, and despite believing I was on top of all the new technical trends, I have quickly come to realize that I have fallen well behind. Everything centers on the cell phone and its applications, and the laptop computer. I was proud of my abilities to text message with my so called fancy phone, but apparently, my phone is a dinosaur. It doesn’t access Youtube or television or keep me in touch with Facebook 24/7. Students and instructors at Fleming are always in touch through a huge computer network. Class outlines, notes, and assignments are available on line anytime, and updates on all college activities are always coming to students’ inboxes so an event is never missed. This was wonderful during the support staff strike as we were kept informed every step of the way without having to wait for the news via television or the newspaper. What does all this have to do with KAGS you might ask? Well, I have been pondering the impact technology has on our organization. We have come into the 21 century with a great website and Gail has put us on Facebook as well, but I think the time has come for us to look at other ways that we can use the latest of technology to get our information out to the public. Our gallery has from the beginning always struggled to get noticed – to let people know who we are and where we are located. How many times have you had someone tell you they have never heard of KAGS? I think by looking at innovative ways to raise our profile and get our voice out there, we can bring in more visitors and clients and also make us more appealing to the younger generation. Our Annual General Meeting is coming up and the Executive needs to hear from you. I know you are thinking “oh how boring”, but before your eyes glaze over and you stop reading, please reconsider the importance of this event. The AGM is a great forum to have your thoughts and opinions heard. The Executive wants and needs your input on the direction KAGS should be heading. As our membership grows, the whole operation needs to grow and change as well, and in order to ensure the vitality of our organization, we desperately rely on the participation of our members. Continually we struggle to get our members to step up and do their part. So as your new President, I ask this of you.......please make participation at the AGM one of your obligations as a KAGS member. Let’s ensure the next AGM results in a change for our future. The date of this meeting is Sunday November 6, 2011 – starts at 1:00 Exhibiting work in an all-member show...All members of KAGS are entitled to show their work in any of the all-member shows scheduled throughout the year. Members are notified in advance about upcoming shows, either by email or telephone. The requirements for entering work in an all-member show are: A current membership in KAGS The work should fit with the theme of the show (e.g. landscapes or paintings of animals would not be accepted in the Portrait and figure show) Paintings should be the artist’s own original work, not copied from a book, calendar, etc. All work should be suitably framed, with hardware securely attached a few inches from the top of the frame. A label should be attached to the back of the work with the artist’s name, phone number, the title of the painting, the price (or NFS) and the medium used. Work should be delivered to the Gallery at the times specified by the convener. Oil and acrylic painting should be thoroughly dry so that they can be safely handled by the hanging crew. Gallery sitting from 1 – 4pm at least once during the show is a condition of having paintings hung. If you are unable to gallery-sit, please ensure that someone can do this duty for you. Members are asked to contribute a food item for the show opening. Work should be picked up between 4pm and -6 pm on Thursday (last day of the show) Intake for all-member shows is usually on Thursday from 6-7:30 pm and Friday from 9:30 – Noon The show is designed and hung on Friday afternoon. All-member shows open on the following Sunday, 1 -4 pm. These guidelines do not apply to private or self-hung shows (e.g. the Christmas show) where members rent space and hang their own work. Please check with the show convener.
A copy of the Newsletter is now available upon request to members only. Just email KAGS and request it. It is easy to read and the pictures are in colour. This is the wave of the future. If you have Adobe Reader you can open the PDF... The shows have been great this year, with lots of attendance. We encourage all new members and seasoned members alike to get involved in their gallery. It is the best way to discover the benefits of belonging to KAGS. Join one or two of the studio groups, enter some shows, come to the openings, be a part of the co-op. The rewards are great.
