Myria Rei Solas

I was born in Toronto, raised in Scarborough and have lived in Peterborough for the past twenty years. I am a full time mother, part-time student and do art whenever I can.  Over the last ten years I have explored the use of acrylics.  I began to search for a style and imagery that was my own and wasn’t just a reproduction of something I saw with my eyes but rather what I felt or saw in my mind or perhaps something I dreamt of.  Art has always been like meditation for me.  When I create nothing else exists or maybe it’s a zen thing and everything exists as a oneness.  It is a way for me to communicate with the Great Divine outside and inside myself. I love the process.  It is where I touch on who I am and how I feel.

Currently I am doing mainly abstracts and non-objectives on canvas, canvas board and some on wood or fabric.  I use many household items such as rice, paper and sand.  I love textures, patterns and shapes.  The pieces often take months to complete.  I start with an idea, image or feeling and often work on several pieces at once.  The end result is often layers and layers until the piece takes on a life of its own and feels done to me.

My recent pieces are part of a series called ‘Earth Tones and Textures’ and are mainly in earth tones with lots of different textures, using shades, tones, tints and different values and intensities to alter the mood of the paintings.   I rarely use a brush, preferring to use my hands or cloths to work with the paint.  Recent showings include Cossar’s ‘Miniature Show’ in 2004, 2005 and 2006,  ‘The Spirit Within’ show at Trent University in 2005, the women’s art collective ‘Furniture, Fissures and Fancies’ in 2006, and donations to local organizations in 2004 and 2005.

My goals include having my own shows, entering some juried shows and joining some local and regional art organizations or collectives.  I am studying psychology and I plan to do my Masters in counselling psychology specializing in art therapy.  I hope to assist others in their use of art as a vehicle of self expression, exploration and healing, all the things it is for me.  email Myria
